Tamar K. Gottfried, M.D.

Tamar Gottfried is an Arizona native, having grown up in Tempe and graduated from McClintock High School. She attended University of Arizona on a Flinn Foundation Scholarship, spending summers in Mexico and Central America and becoming fluent in Spanish. Dr. Gottfried completed medical school at the University of Arizona in 1994, and received a full ride Dean’s Scholarship and a grant to study women’s health in Fortaleza, Brazil during her fourth year. She also completed graduate classes in medical anthropology during her undergraduate and medical school years- studying the cultural influences on women’s health and health care.
Dr. Gottfried did her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the famed LA County/ University of Southern California program, where she spoke Spanish to patients every day and experienced all aspects of women’s health care. She even participated in the data analysis of a study on declining sperm quality in infertility patients. After passing her boards and completing her residency, Dr. Gottfried moved her growing family back to Arizona to be closer to her parents and to take a job with the Casablanca Clinic in Mesa. In 2001, she started her own private practice in Mesa, providing obstetric and gynecologic care to women of all ages.
Dr. Gottfried practices exclusively at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa and at the Banner Surgicenter on campus. Dr. Gottfried’s beautiful home-like office is on the campus of Banner Desert and offers in-house blood draw services, in-office minor surgery, including LEEP and ablation procedures, and radiologist-read ultrasounds in the office, as well as computerized medical records, video colposcopy and first trimester ultrasound for every new pregnancy. She enjoys taking care of a variety of obstetric and gynecologic conditions from contraception, to heavy bleeding, to abnormal paps, menopausal issues, dermatologic gynecology and basic infertility, to normal and abnormal pregnancy.
Dr.Gottfried is the current Chair of Ob/Gyn Department at Banner Desert Medical Center committee and as Vice Chairman of the Ob/gyn department. She continues as a member of the Peer review and hospital Core Measures committees. She precepts medical students from the University of Arizona College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She recently finished a 2 year term as president of her hiking club.
Dr. Gottfried is the proud mom to 3 adult sons, 2 rescue dogs, a cat and a turtle. She lives in Gilbert with her husband and enjoys hiking and backpacking with the Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club, going to the gym, seeing plays at Gammage, trying to agility train her cattle dog, and spending time with family.
Sharon Scanlon, Midwife
Sharon Scanlon is a native of central Illinois. She graduated from her basic RN program in 1990 at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, IL. She then worked in medical/surgical nursing before embarking in a career in maternal/child health one year later. She worked as a staff nurse in labor/delivery and newborn nursery in Illinois while completing her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree and then Master of Science in Maternal/Child Health with a Midwifery Focus from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1999.
Her background also includes seven years of teaching nursing full-time to RN students. Her small hometown community experienced the loss of a large number of manufacturing jobs resulting in a demand for job retraining. Sharon stepped up to the plate to fill the need for expansion of the local nursing programs.
Sharon relocated to Florida in 2009 and worked with women and their families in Tampa Bay and then Sarasota. Sharon has delivered over 2000 babies over the years, each one a little miracle! She enjoys providing full-scope midwifery care to women from adolescence to post-menopause. As a midwife her focus is to support each woman as an individual with unique desires and needs.
Sharon’s only daughter and son-in-law have two small children. Sharon and her husband combined have six children and 14 grandchildren living all over the Arizona on Christmas day 2020, Sharon and her husband Bob made the decision to relocate. They moved from Florida to Arizona late 2021! In her spare time Sharon loves hearth and home, walking, hiking, reading, exploring the world and playing a little pickleball.
